The Master System was Sega’s 8-bit contender, released in 1985 in Japan as the Mark III and rebuilt for the West a year later. It had better raw specifications than the NES but lost North America decisively — while dominating Brazil and doing well across Europe.
That regional split shaped the library. Alongside Sega arcade conversions sit Phantasy Star, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap and a run of European-developed titles that never appeared on Nintendo hardware at all.

The two systems had different palettes and sprite limits, so multi-platform titles were rebuilt rather than ported. Master System versions usually have more on-screen colour.
It is the Japanese version of the same console. Mark III releases are listed under Master System here.
