Sony’s first console shipped in Japan in 1994 and took the industry from Nintendo in about three years. Cheap CD pressing lowered the barrier for third parties, and the hardware’s texture-mapped 3D made polygons the default rather than an effect.

The catalogue is enormous and unusually broad: Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3 and the long run of Japanese role-playing games that reached the West for the first time on this machine.
